Originally built in 1972-76, this distinctive landmark in the city of london has recently undergone a substantial refurbishment, transforming the building into a 50,000 sq ft high-end office space. Our team played a crucial role in delivering this premium city ‘cat a’ fit-out with an industrial feel.
One of the architectural landmarks of the City of London, 80 Cannon Street was originally designed by Arup in 1972-76. Built on four giant legs, the distinctive glass floating building above the Cannon Street Station was designed to distribute the weight through the site so that the Jubilee Line could be extended underneath it.
Set in a prime location of South Cannon Street, immediately adjacent to the train and underground station, 80 Cannon Street offers 50,000 sq ft of premium office space with excellent transport links and connectivity.
Approached by commercial interior design and workplace consultants, Harmsen Tilney Shane in October 2016, our team has supported the design team from the initial stages. Full lighting design and calculations were produced alongside renders of the space to help visualise the effect of the new lighting. Driven by design brief of creating a contemporary and visually stimulating premium space with an industrial feel, the scheme celebrates geometric lines and multi-dimensional layers.
All floors (except for the mezzanine floor) benefit from being column free, giving the occupants freedom and full flexibility of arranging their office space.
The light and airy office floors boast plenty of daylight. The industrial interior design with the bold steel construction and exposed services was calling for an elegant and dramatic lighting scheme. The standard sized recessed trimless linear profile Lopen in white finish was used to seamlessly blend into the crisp plaster boards. The suspended linear profile, Lopen in custom length was used to run alongside the edges of the plaster board to provide sufficient illumination of the workplace.
The black finish of the luminaires compliments the geometric lines in the space. The outstanding performance and efficiency combined with a clean-cut look make the Lopen an ideal luminaire for general office lighting. Fitted with an opal diffuser, it enhances the interiors, creating clean lines of light.
An identical style of design was adopted in the mezzanine floor area. The continuous linear lines were achieved by lopen suspended and lopen recessed trimless in standard and bespoke systems ranging from 2804mm, 7056 mm to 9250 mm.
The suspended systems were supplied in a contemporary black finish. The recessed trimless systems were supplied in white to allow the lighting to blend into the plasterboard features. Around the perimeter of the mezzanine floor, the recessed Pipes RVS XS from Intra lighting have been used. These give the scheme a bit more of a tactile and soft touch whilst retaining the industrial look.
All linear lighting for the office space was supplied as Dali dimmable and some of the luminaires were supplied with emergency packs to comply with regulations.

The refurbishment of the reception area proved to be the main challenge, having to remain fully operational throughout the duration of the project.
The reception area features an impressive multi-layered scheme using lighting as a vehicle to tie the whole scheme together and allowing the key features of the design to stand out.
The contemporary signage in polished concrete has been illuminated by recessed feature wall lighting from LED-C4.
In the toilets, the suspended tube-shaped luminaire Pipes S L from Intra lighting in a contemporary black finish was used. The Pipes boast impressive light quality combined with high output making it a popular choice in accent architectural lighting.
The result is a premium contemporary lighting scheme with an industrial feel. The fitout has been carried out by Area Sq, completed in an impressive 3 weeks ahead of the schedule and of minimum disruption to current tenants.
